OBA Institute - Evolving Liability in the Environmental and Natural Resources Regulatory Landscape

On Tuesday, February 4, 2020, Matthew Gardner will be co-chairing the OBA Institute's Environmental Law and Natural Resources and Energy Law Program titled: Evolving Liability in the Environmental and Natural Resources Regulatory Landscape.

Environmental and natural resource regulatory liabilities continue to evolve in Ontario and reach farther than ever.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (“MNRF”), the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (“MECP”) and Ontario’s Conservation Authorities have significant regulatory authority to issue orders and lay charges. What were once seldom-applied statutes are now often used by these entities to regulate development and natural resource project proponents.  As a result, developers, contractors, land owners, municipalities and others find themselves faced with new and expanding environmental liabilities that may stop a project in its tracks.
