Ontario Waterpower Association: Power of Water Canada Conference

On Tuesday, October 18, 2016, Julie Abouchar will be moderating at the Ontario Waterpower Association: Power of Water Canada Conference in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario.

Julie will be moderating the session titled: Looking Forward - How Might Emerging Legal and Policy Directions Shape the Future of Consultation with Indigenous Communities?

The landscape of Indigenous participation in renewable energy projects has shifted dramatically over the last decade.  From “business to business relationships” as a premise of resource access to capacity set asides and incentives based on equity participation, the roles and of relationships with Indigenous communities in energy projects continues to evolve.

This session will discuss this changing dynamic and will consider how emerging legal and policy directions could shape consultation for waterpower projects in the future, and will include an overview of and United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC).  Panelists will also discuss nation to nation relationships and consultation protocols, reconciliation, and how a strong commitment to understanding, supporting and respecting Indigenous communities has brought success to businesses.
