Willms & Shier 2012 Summer Law Student and Articling Student Programs

Willms & Shier Environmental Lawyers LLP is Canada’s leading environmental law firm. Willms & Shier has represented lawyers and industrial, municipal, institutional, First Nations and Métis clients for more than 35 years. We are a small firm of 12 lawyers, 5 of whom are Environmental Law Specialists, certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada.

Each year, Willms & Shier invites students to apply for our summer law student and articling student programs. The firm will select one summer law student and one articling student, giving preference to students who have demonstrated an interest in the environmental field and have knowledge of current environmental issues.

2012 SUMMER LAW STUDENT PROGRAM

Willms & Shier’s summer law student program provides the student with an opportunity to work with our lawyers on a variety of tasks and client matters. These events could entail research, writing articles for legal or client-focused magazines, updating leading legal texts and memos, attending client meetings, hearings, motions, mediation, or examinations for discovery. Whether it is sitting in on conference calls, meetings or reviewing files, we encourage the student to participate, interact with others, contribute and generate ideas.

We appoint a mentor who will be instrumental in helping the student identify the areas that interest them and obtain various assignments. As we are a small firm, the lawyers will also approach the student directly to assign work rather than follow a formal rotation or work allotment process. The lawyers are eager to challenge the student, help them develop their legal reasoning skills and provide ongoing guidance and feedback during and after each assignment.

We are confident that you will gain some valuable hands-on experience, enjoy working in a supportive and friendly environment and understand what it is like to practice environmental law.

We interview and select candidates in accordance with the Law Society of Upper Canada's Recruitment Procedures, although we do not participate in the fall On Campus Interview (OCI). For more information please click here.

ARTICLING STUDENT PROGRAM

Willms & Shier’s articling student program ensures that the student has the opportunity to assist in some or all of the firm’s practice areas: environmental transactions, environmental civil litigation, defence of prosecutions, climate change law, energy law, and Aboriginal law. As there is no formal rotation or work allotment, we appoint both a mentor and a principal to the student to assist with work assignments, answer questions, offer guidance and provide advice. The lawyers working with the student will also provide direct, informal feedback.

We interview and select candidates in accordance with the Law Society of Upper Canada's Recruitment Procedures. For more information please click here.

If you wish to be considered for our summer law student position or articling student program, please submit a cover letter and resume to Josephine Schembri, Managing Director, Willms & Shier Environmental Lawyers LLP, 4 King Street West, Suite 900, Toronto, ON M5H 1B6.
