Bowater’s Gatineau mill, located in the Ottawa Region, produces quality newsprint using wood chips, old magazines and old newspapers as its primary fibre sources.  On average, the mill produces approximately 435,000 tonnes of newsprint per year of which 95% of the mill's production is shipped to North American markets.  The Bowater mill in Gatineau is one of the most important producers of recycled-content newsprint in North America.  The Bowater mill in Gatineau was the first pulp and paper mill in Quebec to obtain registration according to the international standard for environmental management, ISO 14001, in 1998.
The facility includes primary and secondary wastewater treatment systems, which ensure thorough removal of all contaminants from the water.  An electrostatic precipitator is another example of an important environmental abatement technology in operation at the mill.  The precipitator is used to reduce particulate matter emissions to the environment, thereby improving air quality.
